There’s something whimsical about toile. If you’re not familiar with toile, or more properly called, Toile de Jouy (“fabric of Jouy’), it is a beautiful french-inspired print that tells stories through eye-romancing vignettes, traditionally made up of pastoral scenes. These vignettes are laid out in timeless patterns on white cotton fabric with an overlay of a single color. Blue, red, and black are common toile hues. 

This charming storytelling print almost didn’t become the timeless pattern it is today. Cotton was initially banned in France out of fear of its negative impact on the silk and wool markets. In the 18th century, the ban on imported cotton was lifted and this fabric caught the eye of Christopher-Philippe Oberkampf at the Jouy textile factory located in Jouy-en-Josas, a suburb just outside of Paris. 

Toile was instantly a big hit in France and soon made it’s way to The Americas. Today, it remains a timeless staple. We’ve noticed a reemergence of toile reminiscent of the past with a touch of modernism in home decor and fashion. Today, it’s popularity is most sought after on wallpapers and upholstered furniture, but the trend doesn’t stop there. Celebrities like Meghan Markle and Selena Gomez recently wore beautiful toile inspired fashion pieces designed by Oscar de la Renta.
